Now, it became the main sago producing area of Sarawak Borneo. It is also home to one of the indigenous group in Sarawak, the Melanau tribe. The Melanaus are known for their gentle, loving nature and seafaring skills. Get ready to be fascinated on the Melanau villages and the locals’ daily activities.

What to Expect When Visiting Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

Day 1: Sarikei – Sibu

At Sarikei, stop by for lunch at local cafe. As you continue your journey to Sibu, you can see there are a several fruit stalls along the road. Stop by to taste the delicious local fruits such as Pineapples, Bananas, Durian or more. Upon arrival at Sibu, check-in to you hotel. Afterwards proceed to Sibu Night Market, which open every evening except heavy rains. Be amazed by the sumptuous local food and other interesting things that can be found at the market. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Sibu – Lamin Dana, Mukah

Wake up and have your breakfast at the hotel before your Sibu city tour start. First off, go for a relaxing walk on an esplanade alongside the Rajang River, the longest river in Malaysia. Witness the locals using the river taxis to move along the river. Witness the “Floating Grocery Store” that serves the riverine villagers. Next, visit the Chinese Temple, climb up the Seven Storey Pagoda where it offers you a 360-degree view of Sibu Town.

Then, proceed to Sibu Heritage Centre. Along the way, you’ll get to soak in the sights and smells of local pastries fresh out of the earthen oven. Small businesses along the alleyways offer you some great photo opportunities. At the Sibu Heritage Centre, you’ll get to know more about Sibu’s history, the local communities’ cultures, lifestyles, and traditions. After that, continue to the largest indoor market in Malaysia, Sibu Central Market. It houses more than 1,200 hawker stalls selling a variety of local products. See the locals bargaining and some rare local products that you’ve never seen before.

Continue your journey the Melanau Heartland of Dalat Town via speedboat. You’ll get to witness the authentic local villages and longhouses along the way. You can also see the shipyards, timber, and sago processing factories too. Before reaching Dalat Town, stop by at River Kut Melanau Villages.Here you’ll get to take a glimpse at the beautiful and serene village life. At the Dalat Town, make your way to visit the iconic Church by the river and The Jerunei Gardens. Then, proceed to Lamin Dana, a unique lodge that houses the Melanau Cultural Centre. Spend the night at the lodge and learn more about Melanau Culture. (Lunch on own)

Day 3: Mukah

After breakfast, take a relaxing cruise boat along the Telian River and Misan River. Make your way to the Sago Processing Centre, where you can see how Sago produces in the traditional way. The Sago is useful in food and beverages for local delicacies. Next, proceed to Mukah market to experience the locals trading and bargaining activity. Grab the chance to taste some rare dishes such as Siet (Sago Worm) and  Umai (Fresh Raw Fish). Finally, proceed to Mangrove Trails to see some of the flora and fauna there. Return back to the lodge and rest before checking-out. Bid farewell to your host in Lamin Dana and proceed to Mukah Airport for departure.
