The Astana was build in 1870 by the second White Raja Charles Brooke as a wedding gift to his wife Margaret Alice Lili de Windt. The residence was originally three separate buildings with each connected to the other by short and narrow passageway. The Astana has since undergone major renovations and alterations befitting it as the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak.

Fort Margherita is a old fort build in 1897 by Charles Brooke named after Brookes beloved wife. The three stores tower blocks battlement includes a watch point on top , a courtyard surrounded by high walls with sharp glass shards inlaid for protection and set into the walls itself are wooden windows from where the cannons were fired. The fort was well equipped to protect the capital from river borne invasions.
