Stop At: The Grand Old Lady, Canada Hill, Miri 98000 Malaysia
The Grand Old Lady is not a literal old lady. It is Miri’s first drilled oil well which took place in the year of 1910 by Shell Company. The Grand Old Lady is one of Miri’s many main places of interest and also acts as an important monument in the eyes of the locals and definitely, the world’s. This famous landmark has a height of 30 meters and marked the beginning of the modernization of Miri city as back in the years before the discovery of The Grand Old Lady, Miri is just an undeveloped fishing village.
The tour including the petroleum museum situated just next to The Grand Old Lady. If you’re looking for an educational tour, the Grand Old Lady and the Petroleum Museum will be the best place. On the hill, you will see a model named the Nodding Donkey that is used to erect the crude oil. There is also a site of the Time Capsule. There are many exhibits and models in the museum that include a scaled oil platform, tools used back in the days to extract crude oil and definitely, the products made. History and the processes involve the extraction of crude oil to the process and end products are all written down and elaborated.

San Ching Temple is the largest Taoist temple standing in South East Asia. Its elegance architecture is what tourists shouldn’t miss. It takes up 1.5 acres of land and is bordered by the housing area. A visit to the temple is worth it to have a closer understanding of Taoism. This temple was built not quite long ago, in the year 2000. The construction of the temple took as long as three years and a total amount of RM10 million to be completed. The door arch of the temple itself is impressive with a pair of carving dragons in the entrance of the temple. These carvings are brought from China. You can hear the soothing sound of wind chimes in the temple while appreciating the colorful wall painting, carvings, and the statues. One of the unique attractions is its serene and tranquil environment.

Miri City Fan is an award-winning urban park complex comprising a variety of theme gardens, including a Botanical Garden and an Islamic Garden. It is also home to Miri City Library, a Public Swimming Pool, a musical fountain, a cultural center and a large Amphitheatre where concerts are frequently held. The City Fan is popular with locals for strolling, jogging or just chilling out.
Built-in stages in the mid-1990s and completed by the late 1990s, Miri City Fan is a unique fan-shaped (when viewed from the air) urban civic public park, it is about 26 acres and the City Fan is designed to create civic consciousness by the embodiment of several symbolic parks. It is a world-class urban civic park with the setting for sport, educational and cultural activities.

The Miri Handicraft Centre is a fascinating showcase of the ethnic arts and crafts of northern Sarawak, a new and comfortable place to shop for souvenirs. Stalls are run by the individual producers, and craftspeople can often be viewed at work here. Items on sale include Penan mats and basketry, Orang Ulu beadwork and woodcarvings, and a variety of textiles from around the state. You can find handicrafts from different tribes like Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Kelabit, Berawan, Kayan, Kenyah and many more just in one place. They’re also cultural performances which are occasionally held at weekends.

Tamu Muhibbah is a local farmers market where you can find various tropical fruits, vegetables, handicrafts and local produce from upriver areas. This market is divided into three sections Tamu Muhibbah, Tamu Khas and Tamu Kedayan. This is where you can find items such as the Bario highland rice, hill salt, locally made shrimp paste, fermented shrimp, sago produce, palm sugar, local biscuits, snacks and this is also the place for locals getting their daily supply of fresh veggies, fruits, eggs, unique jungle produce too like ferns, coconut, bamboo shoots, tapioca shoots, and many more.
