Penang Hill is the oldest British hill station in Southeast Asia, dated late 1700’s. Ride the steep funicular railway up Penang Hill. Enjoy panoramic views across the island and explore the historic British hill station, dating back to the 18th century.

Stop At: Kek Lok Si Temple, 1000-L, Tingkat Lembah Ria 1, Air Itam, Penang Island 11500 Malaysia

Staggered on hillside terraces overlooking Air Itam, Malaysia’s largest Buddhist temple is a visual delight. Built between 1890 and 1905, Kek Lok Si is the cornerstone of the Malay-Chinese community, which provided the funding for its two-decade-long construction (and ongoing additions). Its key features are the seven-tier Thousand-Buddha Pagoda and an awesome 36.5 meters-high bronze statue of Goddess of Mercy.

To reach the temple’s main entrance, you’ll have to run the gauntlet of souvenir stalls on the uphill path. You’ll also pass a pond packed with turtles. There are a lot of stairs involved, but the final stretch up to the statute of Goddess of Mercy is covered by a funicular.

One of the clan houses still standing in George Town, the Khoo Kongsi clan house takes on a remarkable resemblance to a mini clan village. It features tall thin columns supporting a gently sloping, red tiled roof, topped with carvings of dragons, phoenixes, mythical animals and various scenes from popular Chinese legends. The clan house also has a grand hall adorned with resplendent and intricate carvings and richly ornamented pillars which are said to have been crafted by master craftsmen from China.

The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is a stately mansion, refurbished to reflect bygone days of the Straits Chinese settlement in Penang. This magnificent townhouse is the former residence and office of Chinese Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee. He was a 19th century Hakka tin-miner and secret society leader of Hai San. The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is filled with more than 1,000 antiques and collectibles. The residence is unique and incorporates various Chinese architecture. The townhouse, built in the 1890s incorporates Chinese carved-wood panels, with English floor tiles and Scottish iron works.

Built in the 1880s, this famous indigo-blue Chinese Courtyard House in George Town was the residence of Cheong Fatt Tze, a prominent Chinese figure in the newly established Penang Straits Settlement during the 19th century. The mansion was built by master craftsmen brought in especially from China, who used their skills to fashion the mansion with 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases and 220 windows. In 2000, the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion received the inaugural UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award, selected as the ‘Most Excellent Project’ in the Asia Pacific Rim following its RM7.6 million restoration works.

You will be taken on a guided tour of the farm lasting about 30 minutes, together with one of the farm guides. After the tour, the farm guide will conduct the introduction of Virgin Coconut Oil process, Enzyme process, the natural soap making process, and also a sample tasting of its very own signature fruit enzymes.

You will also be able to sample its lemongrass teas and various varieties of its tropical honey. The largest and most intact of the clan jetties, Chew Jetty consists of 75 elevated houses, several Chinese temples, a community hall and lots of tourist facilities, all linked by elevated wooden walkways. It’s a fun place to wander around admiring docked fishing boats while the scent of frying fish wafts across the walkways. There are numerous places to browse souvenirs and nibble snack food.

Snake Temple was built in 1850, dedicated to Chor Soo Kong, a Buddhist priest and healer. It is one of the few places where you can get up close to a bunch of venomous snakes and live to tell the tale.

Wat Chaiyamangalaram is a Thai temple in George Town and famous for its large gold plated Reclining Buddha, which at 33 meters and is one of the largest in the world. The temple dates back to 1845 and is built on land given to the Thai people by Queen Victoria of Great Britain during their rule of the island.

100-year-old trees, forested hills and the giant water lilies of the Amazon River basin are just some of nature’s treasures awaiting visitors to the Penang Botanic Gardens.

Also known as the Waterfall Gardens because of the cascading waterfalls nearby, the Gardens were originally established by the British in 1884 as a research centre studying the commercial viability of exquisite plants from different parts of the world. These days, the Gardens not only offer tranquillity from the urban rush, but also an education in botanical conservation.

There are many walking tracks one can choose from, leading to plants like the Pinang Palm (Areca catechu, from which the island of Penang got its name), and wildlife such as long-tailed Macaques, Dusky Leaf Monkeys, Black Giant Squirrels and a myriad of insects and butterflies. A note if you’re planning on having a picnic: the monkeys aren’t exactly coy about wanting a share of your food, so be prepared for the eventuality that you may need to refuel later.
